Is the Boat Ramp Usable? Reading Lake Elevation Before You Launch
Nothing ruins a morning like backing down a ramp that ends in mud — or one that is underwater and roped off. A quick look at the lake level before you leave the driveway usually tells you which it is.
When the lake is too high
On flood-control lakes, a high pool can put the ramp, the parking, and the courtesy dock underwater, and managers often close ramps during high water for safety. High water also floats logs and debris into the launch area. If the lake is well above conservation pool, check whether your ramp is even open before you go.
When the lake is too low
During a drawdown or a dry spell, the water can drop below the end of a ramp, leaving you unable to float the boat off the trailer — or exposing rock and stumps right off the ramp. Shallow, low-water ramps are the first to become unusable.
